Key Joomla Extensions
Introduction
Joomla is a powerful and flexible content management system, but maintaining a successful website involves more than choosing a template and publishing content. Security, reliable backups and good performance all play important roles in keeping a website running smoothly.
Over many years of developing, hosting and maintaining Joomla websites, three extensions have become a regular part of my toolkit:
Admin Tools — helping protect and maintain the website.
Akeeba Backup — creating reliable backups and providing a practical route to recovery.
JCH Optimize — improving website loading speed and performance.
These aren't simply extensions I've tried briefly. They're products I actively use on Joomla websites I look after, and I recommend them to other Joomla site owners.
All three offer free versions, but for professionally maintained websites, I favour their Professional editions.
Akeeba — Two Essential Joomla Extensions
Akeeba Ltd develops two of the Joomla extensions I consider particularly valuable: Admin Tools and Akeeba Backup.
They address different but closely related responsibilities. Admin Tools helps strengthen a website's security, while Akeeba Backup gives you a way to preserve and recover your website's files and database.
Both offer free Core versions, with additional capabilities in their Professional editions.
For users interested in both products, Akeeba offers an Essentials for Joomla! bundle covering Admin Tools Professional and Akeeba Backup Professional. At the time of writing, the bundle is priced at €75 for the first year, followed by €45 per year, with licensing for unlimited sites and domains.
It's an attractive option for anyone responsible for maintaining Joomla websites, particularly compared with purchasing both Professional subscriptions separately.

Admin Tools — Website Security
Developer: Akeeba Ltd
Versions: Core (free) and Professional
Professional subscription: From €50 for the first year when purchased individually
Security is one of those aspects of website management that visitors rarely notice when everything is working properly. It's also one of the areas where prevention is much preferable to resolving problems afterwards.
Admin Tools provides a range of security and maintenance features specifically designed for Joomla. Its Professional edition includes a Web Application Firewall and tools for strengthening how the website is protected at server level.
One feature I particularly value is its .htaccess Maker. On compatible Apache-based hosting, this allows detailed security and access rules to be configured without having to maintain every rule manually.
In practice, good security configuration requires some understanding of the website itself. Rules that are too restrictive can interfere with legitimate functionality, such as particular file formats, scripts or administrator operations. I've found Admin Tools gives me the control to strengthen protection while making sensible exceptions where they're needed.
The Professional edition also provides additional security and maintenance capabilities that make it particularly useful for websites receiving ongoing technical management.
Admin Tools isn't a replacement for secure hosting, Joomla updates, strong passwords or sensible administrator practices. I use it as an additional layer of protection within a broader approach to website maintenance.
For Joomla users looking to take website security more seriously, it's one of my strongest recommendations.

Akeeba Backup — Website Backups and Recovery
Developer: Akeeba Ltd
Versions: Core (free) and Professional
Professional subscription: From €50 for the first year when purchased individually
Every website should have a dependable backup strategy. Even a carefully maintained website can encounter a failed update, hosting problem, accidental change or unexpected technical issue.
Akeeba Backup is designed specifically to make backing up Joomla websites straightforward. It can create a complete backup archive containing the website's files and database, with tools that support restoration and migration.
One of my regular maintenance habits is to take a full backup before carrying out significant changes. Whether I'm upgrading extensions, adjusting website configuration or removing obsolete components, having a fresh backup provides an important recovery option if something doesn't go to plan.
Akeeba Backup makes that process convenient. Its configuration options also allow backups to be tailored to different websites and hosting environments.
The Professional edition adds capabilities such as automated backups and integration with remote storage services. These can be especially useful for websites requiring more comprehensive backup arrangements.
I also believe it's important to distinguish creating a backup from having a tested recovery plan. A successful backup is reassuring, but it should be supported by sensible storage arrangements and, where appropriate, restoration testing.
For website owners maintaining their own Joomla installation, even the free Core edition is well worth considering. For the sites I manage professionally, I use Akeeba Backup Professional as part of my maintenance toolkit.

JCH Optimize — Website Speed and Performance
Developer: JCH Optimize
Versions: Free and Pro
Pro annual subscription: Approximately US$55 per year
A website can contain excellent content and attractive imagery but still feel frustrating if its pages are slow to load.
JCH Optimize is a Joomla performance extension that provides tools to help improve how a website's resources are delivered to visitors.
Depending on the configuration and version, these include optimising HTML, CSS and JavaScript, improving CSS delivery, lazy-loading suitable content and optimising images. The Pro edition provides a more extensive range of controls.
I particularly value JCH Optimize on content-rich websites with numerous images, where image dimensions, loading priorities and modern formats such as WebP and AVIF can make a meaningful difference.
What I appreciate most, however, is the degree of control it offers.
Website optimisation isn't always a matter of enabling every available option. Combining or delaying scripts can sometimes interfere with features that depend on a particular loading order. Image optimisation settings can also need adjustment to preserve acceptable quality, especially on larger screens.
My approach is to configure JCH Optimize selectively, check the results in a browser and use tools such as Google PageSpeed Insights to identify areas needing further attention.
Some sites benefit considerably from particular settings, while others need more restrained configuration. I don't treat any performance extension as a guaranteed route to a perfect score.
JCH Optimize is a valuable part of my Joomla maintenance toolkit because it provides practical options for improving speed while allowing the settings to be adapted to the individual website.
For anyone serious about optimising a Joomla website, I recommend looking at the Pro edition.
Why I Use All Three
These three extensions serve different purposes, which is precisely why I think they work so well together.
Admin Tools helps protect a website. Akeeba Backup provides an important route to recovery. JCH Optimize helps improve the experience of visitors using the website.
None replaces careful Joomla maintenance, appropriate hosting or regular updates. Together, however, they provide a strong foundation for looking after a Joomla website properly.
They've earned a permanent place in my own toolkit through practical, long-term use, and I'm comfortable recommending them to people maintaining Joomla websites themselves.
Joomla Hosting and Maintenance with Dijstra Ltd
All Joomla websites I develop and host or maintain include Admin Tools Professional, Akeeba Backup Professional and JCH Optimize Pro as part of the agreed hosting and maintenance arrangements.
The cost of these extensions is included within the service, so clients don't need to purchase or manage separate extension subscriptions.
I also take care of their configuration and maintenance as part of looking after the website.
